Senate House of the University of Madras completed

Built from 1874 to 1879 to a design by Robert Chisholm, the Senate House on the Marina was an early Indo-Saracenic landmark.
The Madras government called for designs in 1864 for a Senate House to serve the University of Madras. Robert Chisholm's plan was accepted, and construction ran from April 1874 to 1879. The building is considered among the oldest and finest Indo-Saracenic structures in the country. Until it was ready, the university held its convocations in the Banqueting Hall, today called Rajaji Hall. In 1937 the Madras legislature held its sittings in the Senate House.
