Designed by George Harding and later altered by Robert Chisholm, Madras Central station was put up by the Madras Railway as its terminus in the city.

Completed in 1873, Madras Central station served as the city terminus of the Madras Railway. Its architect, George Harding, combined Gothic Revival with Romanesque elements. Robert Chisholm prepared a further set of alterations in 1900. Ownership passed to the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway in 1908 and to the Southern Railway in 1951. The station is still among the principal railway hubs of South India.
