Madras Observatory begins daily weather reports

· Chennai

The Madras Observatory started issuing daily weather reports, an early step in organised weather forecasting in south India.

The Madras Observatory, founded in the eighteenth century, was one of the oldest scientific institutions of the Company and Crown in India. In 1875 it began issuing daily weather reports for Madras. Its records were part of the long series of scientific observations made at the Madras Observatory since the Company period. The great famine caused by the failure of the 1876 monsoon followed soon afterwards.
