Ammonia leaked from a subsea pipeline of a fertiliser plant at Ennore, sending dozens of residents of fishing villages to hospital.

Around 11:45 pm on 26 December 2023, ammonia gas leaked from a subsea pipeline linked to the Coromandel International fertiliser unit at Ennore in North Chennai. Residents of nearby fishing villages such as Chinna Kuppam and Periyakuppam fled at night, and 52 people had been hospitalised by the next day. The state Environment Minister ordered the unit to remain shut until further orders, and a technical committee was set up to investigate. The leak came weeks after an oil spill from a refinery had contaminated waterways in the same area during the Cyclone Michaung floods.
