Jain Commission interim report on the Rajiv Gandhi assassination

· New Delhi

Criticism of the DMK over the LTTE in the Jain Commission's interim report prompted Congress to demand the party's exit, bringing down the Gujral government.

Justice Milap Chand Jain was appointed on 23 August 1991 as the sole member of a commission looking into the conspiracy that led to Rajiv Gandhi's assassination. After its term had been extended several times, the commission handed in an interim report in August 1997. In it the DMK, at the time part of the governing United Front, was criticised and connected to the LTTE. Congress, backing I. K. Gujral's government from outside, insisted that DMK ministers be dropped; when that was turned down it pulled its support, and the country went to fresh Lok Sabha polls in 1998. Parliament received the final report on 31 July 1998.
