Set up at Guindy in Madras, the King Institute of Preventive Medicine was created to fight infectious diseases.

Founded at Guindy on 7 November 1899, the King Institute of Preventive Medicine was intended to guard against infectious disease. Its name honoured Lieutenant Colonel W. G. King, who was Sanitary Commissioner of the Madras Presidency at the time. For the presidency it manufactured vaccines and undertook public health testing and research. Today it remains a Tamil Nadu government institution for public health and vaccine research.
