Tamil Nadu Legislative Council abolished

· Fort St. George

The upper house of the Tamil Nadu legislature, in existence since 1921, was abolished at the request of the MGR government.

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Council, which traced its history to the Madras Legislative Council of colonial times, was abolished in 1986. The AIADMK government of M. G. Ramachandran had the state assembly pass a resolution seeking its abolition. Parliament passed the Tamil Nadu Legislative Council (Abolition) Act, which received presidential assent on 30 August 1986 and came into force on 1 November 1986. Since then Tamil Nadu has had a unicameral legislature, and later attempts to revive the council have not succeeded.
