Travancore Temple Entry Proclamation

· Thiruvananthapuram

The Maharaja of Travancore opened state temples to all Hindus regardless of caste, including temples in present-day Kanyakumari district.

Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, the Maharaja of Travancore, issued the Temple Entry Proclamation in November 1936. It abolished the ban on people of oppressed castes entering temples under the control of the Travancore government. The princely state then included the area that is today Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu. The proclamation added pressure for similar reform in the Madras Presidency.
