Helena Blavatsky and Henry Steel Olcott moved the headquarters of the Theosophical Society to Adyar in Madras.

The Theosophical Society was founded in New York in 1875 by Helena Blavatsky, Henry Steel Olcott and others. In 1882 its headquarters moved with Blavatsky and Olcott to Adyar, in Madras. Adyar became the international centre of the Society, later led by Annie Besant. The Society influenced Hindu and Buddhist revival movements and early Indian nationalist networks in Madras.
