Ananda Vikatan started life as a Tamil monthly, and S. S. Vasan acquired and relaunched it in 1928.

Pudhoor Vaidyanadha Iyer founded Ananda Vikatan in February 1926, publishing it once a month. When the magazine ran into money troubles, S. S. Vasan purchased the rights in January 1928 and reissued it in a fresh format in February 1928. With Vasan in charge it grew into one of the most popular Tamil magazines. Other publications and media ventures were later added under the Vikatan group.
