The steamer SS Rajula ran a fortnightly Straits Service from Madras to Penang, Port Klang and Singapore from 1926 to 1972.

Large numbers of Tamils migrated from the Madras Presidency to British Malaya in the colonial period. From 1926 the SS Rajula operated a fortnightly Straits Service between Madras and Penang, Port Klang and Singapore. The service continued until 1972 and carried many migrants and their families. Most Malaysian Indians are ethnic Tamils, and the Tamil migrants of the colonial period came primarily from Tamil Nadu.
