Andhra University established by Madras Act

· Visakhapatnam

After a bill carried with Tamil votes, the Madras legislature set up Andhra University for the Presidency's Telugu districts.

Andhra University came into being in 1926 by virtue of a statute the Madras Legislative Council had passed, Madras Act II of 1926, formally titled the Andhra University Act, 1925. Its purpose was to serve the Telugu-speaking districts of the Madras Presidency. Some Tamil members of the Justice Party had resisted the proposal, and once it passed, demands for a separate Tamil university grew. Its founder is generally considered to be C. R. Reddy. The university stands in Visakhapatnam.
