Ennore declared a major port
· Ennore
Ennore's new port, north of Chennai, gained major port status and was incorporated as Ennore Port Limited, the first major port in India run as a company.
Roughly 18 km to the north of Chennai Port, a new harbour at Ennore was granted major port status in March 1999 under the Indian Ports Act, 1908. In October 1999 it was incorporated under the Companies Act as Ennore Port Limited. Being the first Indian port organised as a public company placed it beyond the reach of the Tariff Authority for Major Ports. Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee commissioned it on 1 February 2001, and the unloading of thermal coal in June 2001 marked the start of commercial work. It was afterwards renamed Kamarajar Port.
