Koyambedu wholesale market complex opens

On Chennai's western side, the Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex, one of the largest perishable goods markets in Asia, was opened.
Opened at Koyambedu, Chennai, in 1996, the Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex (KWMC) was meant to shift wholesale dealing in flowers, fruits and vegetables away from the crowded city centre. The site covers 295 acres and holds around 3,100 shops, of which over 1,000 are wholesale and 2,000 retail. It is counted among the biggest perishable goods market complexes in Asia. Later the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus was constructed beside it.
