Battle tanks became the business of the Heavy Vehicles Factory, which the Ordnance Factory Board set up at Avadi.

In 1961 the Ordnance Factory Board founded the Heavy Vehicles Factory at Avadi, near Madras, to make heavy equipment for the battlefield. The Army Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers was responsible for designing it, while the Corps of Engineers built it. Over time the factory turned out the Vijayanta tank, followed by the T-72, Arjun and T-90. Defence manufacturing grew into a major industry at Avadi.
