Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited came into being to set up heavy electrical factories, among them the boiler plant at Tiruchirappalli.

To meet growing demand for power, the Union government decided on new heavy electrical equipment factories at Hyderabad, Haridwar and Tiruchirappalli. On 13 November 1964 Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited was formally incorporated to establish and run them. Boilers and their components were the speciality of the Tiruchirappalli complex. The plant grew into one of the biggest industrial employers in central Tamil Nadu, and an engineering cluster developed around the city because of it.
