Lawrence Asylum founded at Lovedale in the Nilgiris

· Lovedale, Ooty

A Lawrence military asylum for the children of British soldiers opened at Lovedale near Ooty; it became the Lawrence School.

The school was one of four Lawrence Military Asylums planned by Sir Henry Montgomery Lawrence, who wanted boarding schools in hill stations for the children of soldiers of the British Indian Army. Lawrence was killed at Lucknow in 1857, and the Lovedale school opened in 1858, after those at Sanawar and Mount Abu. It was later known as the Lawrence Memorial Royal Military School. The Lawrence School, Lovedale remains one of the best known residential schools in the Nilgiris.
