The military station of Jakkatalla in the Nilgiris was renamed Wellington and construction of its barracks began.

The military station near Coonoor in the Nilgiris was known as Jakkatalla, after a nearby Badaga village. In 1852 Sir Richard Armstrong, then Commander-in-Chief, recommended renaming it Wellington in honour of the Duke of Wellington. Construction of the Wellington Barracks began in 1852 and was completed in 1860. The barracks later became the home of the Madras Regimental Centre.
