Madras Native Association founded
· Chennai
One of India's earliest Indian political bodies, the Madras Native Association, was set up by Gazulu Lakshminarasu Chetty.
Gazulu Lakshminarasu Chetty and his associates formed the Madras Native Association on 26 February 1852 so that educated Indians could voice complaints about Company rule. With the Company's charter due for renewal, the association sent the British Parliament a lengthy petition in 1852. It objected to high taxes and the revenue system, and to the neglect of education and public works. On 25 February 1853 the petition was read out in the House of Lords. Later Madras organisations such as the Madras Mahajana Sabha are seen as its successors.
