Madras High Court established

Crown Letters Patent created the High Court of Judicature at Madras in place of the Supreme Court of Madras.
Under the Indian High Courts Act 1861, Letters Patent dated 26 June 1862 set up the Madras High Court as one of the three charter High Courts. It took over from the Supreme Court of Madras, which had held jurisdiction over the city from 1817, and from the Company's Sadr Adalat courts. The court sat in a building at Periamet between 1862 and 1892, after which it shifted to its current Indo-Saracenic premises close to George Town. It ranks among India's oldest High Courts.
