A police action against lawyers on the Madras High Court campus led to an inquiry by former Supreme Court judge B. N. Srikrishna.

In early 2009 lawyers in Chennai were among the groups holding protests over the Sri Lankan civil war. On 19 February 2009 the police took action against lawyers on the Madras High Court campus, in what was reported as a clash between lawyers and police. Former Supreme Court judge B. N. Srikrishna headed a one-man commission to inquire into the incidents. He submitted an interim report to the Supreme Court on 4 March 2009.
