Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary established

About 60 square km of forest in the Nilgiris district was set aside as the Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary.
In 1940 an area of about 60 square km in the Nilgiris district was established as the Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary. In 1914 large forest tracts on the neighbouring Sigur Plateau had been declared reserve forest for systematic logging. The sanctuary was enlarged in 1977 and later became a national park. It has formed part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve since 1986.
