Vedanthangal declared a bird sanctuary

Vedanthangal near Madurantakam was officially declared a wildlife sanctuary, the oldest in India.
Villagers at Vedanthangal had long protected the waterbirds that nested in the tank, whose droppings enriched their fields, and had obtained a written order from the Chingleput Collector in the late eighteenth century. In the mid nineteenth century the Collector ordered the area to be protected. It was officially declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1936, and is considered the oldest in India. It was designated a Ramsar site in 2022.
