Kalakshetra founded by Rukmini Devi Arundale

· Adyar, Chennai

Rukmini Devi Arundale founded Kalakshetra at Adyar, Madras, an academy for Bharatanatyam and the arts.

Rukmini Devi Arundale, a dancer associated with the Theosophical Society, founded Kalakshetra in Madras in 1936. The institution trained students in Bharatanatyam, Carnatic music and related arts. It played a major part in the revival and reshaping of Bharatanatyam as a classical concert art, at a time when temple dance associated with devadasis was under attack. The academy later became an institution of national importance.
