Nilgiris separated from Coimbatore district

In August 1868 the Nilgiri hills were detached from Coimbatore district and given a commissioner of their own.
After the 1820s Ootacamund (Ooty) developed into a hill sanatorium and a summer refuge for the Madras Presidency. The Nilgiris was split off from Coimbatore district in August 1868, with James Wilkinson Breeks as the first commissioner. Since 1868 a Collector appointed by the government has administered the district. Home to the Toda, Kota, Badaga, Irula and Kurumba communities, the Nilgiris went on to become famous for its tea estates and to serve as the presidency government's summer seat.
