S. Ramadoss founded the Pattali Makkal Katchi, a party rooted in the Vanniyar Sangam and the 1987 reservation agitation.

S. Ramadoss founded the Pattali Makkal Katchi on 16 July 1989. The party grew out of the Vanniyar Sangam, which had led the 1987 agitation for separate reservation for Vanniyars. It aimed to provide political representation for the Vanniyar community, concentrated in northern Tamil Nadu, while also adopting a wider social justice platform. The PMK first contested assembly elections in 1991 and later became a frequent alliance partner of both major Dravidian parties.
