Tamil Nadu parties oppose Rajapaksa's invitation to Modi's swearing-in

· Rashtrapati Bhavan

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa's attendance at Narendra Modi's swearing-in drew opposition from parties across Tamil Nadu.

Narendra Modi invited the heads of government of the SAARC countries, including Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, to his swearing-in as Prime Minister on 26 May 2014. The invitation was heavily criticised by Tamil Nadu politicians because of the treatment of Tamils in Sri Lanka. MDMK leader Vaiko met Modi to try to change his mind, and Congress, MDMK and AIADMK leaders opposed the invitation. Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa did not attend the ceremony, and Tamil groups held protests in Delhi.
