Salem Collector M. D. Cockburn helped start coffee estates at Yercaud in the Shevaroy Hills during the 1820s.

Yercaud is situated in the Shevaroy (Servarayan) Hills in Salem district. During the 1820s M. D. Cockburn, then Collector of Salem district, assisted in setting up coffee estates in these hills, and he also brought in citrus saplings from South Africa. Coffee went on to dominate cultivation there. In time Yercaud developed into a hill resort of the Madras Presidency.
