Madras Chamber of Commerce founded

· George Town, Chennai

The Madras Chamber of Commerce was set up at the Binny & Co. office by merchants from the Parry, Binny and Arbuthnot firms.

Eight businessmen formed the Madras Chamber of Commerce on 29 September 1836. The three firms Parry & Co., Binny & Co. and Arbuthnot & Co. supplied its leading founders, namely J. W. Dare, W. S. Binny and J. A. Arbuthnot, and Arbuthnot became its first chairman. Several European firms joined, as did the Indian merchant G. Sidloo Chetty. The body ranks among the oldest chambers of commerce in the country.
