Arthur Cotton builds the Upper Anaicut at Mukkombu

Arthur Cotton built the Upper Anaicut regulator where the Kollidam branches from the Kaveri, between 1836 and 1838.
The Kaveri divides near Tiruchirappalli into the Kaveri and the Kollidam, which runs in a lower bed and tended to draw away water from the delta. Between 1836 and 1838 Arthur Cotton of the Madras Engineers built a regulator dam at Mukkombu, known as the Upper Anaicut. Cotton drew on his study of the ancient Grand Anicut and its foundations in sand. The work regulated the flow towards the Thanjavur delta, and its success led to his later projects on the Godavari and Krishna.
