Chennai's Viswanathan Anand defeated Alexei Shirov in Tehran to become FIDE World Chess Champion, the first Indian world chess champion.

The 2000 FIDE World Chess Championship was a knockout event held in New Delhi and Tehran. Viswanathan Anand, the top seed, reached the final and defeated Alexei Shirov of Spain in a match played in Tehran from 20 to 26 December 2000. He became the first Indian to win a world chess championship and held the FIDE title until 2002. Anand later won the undisputed world championship in 2007 and defended it several times.
