The Telugu-speaking northern districts were separated from Madras State to form Andhra State, with Madras city remaining in Madras State.

Andhra State was formed on 1 October 1953 from the Telugu-speaking districts of Madras State, with Kurnool as its capital. It was the first state in India created primarily on a linguistic basis, following the death of Potti Sriramulu. The claim to Madras city was not granted, and the city remained the capital of the residuary Madras State. The separation made Madras State more predominantly Tamil-speaking and paved the way for wider linguistic reorganisation in 1956.
