Potti Sriramulu died in Madras after a long fast demanding a separate Telugu-speaking state, prompting the creation of Andhra State.

Potti Sriramulu undertook a fast unto death in Madras demanding a separate state for Telugu-speaking people, with Madras city as its capital. He died on 15 December 1952, which led to unrest across the Telugu districts. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru then announced the formation of Andhra State. The episode raised the question of the future of Madras city, which ultimately remained with Madras State.
