After her acquittal in the TANSI and Pleasant Stay cases, J. Jayalalithaa won the Andipatti by-election and was sworn in again as Chief Minister.

In September 2001 the Supreme Court ruled that J. Jayalalithaa, convicted in the TANSI land case, could not hold office, and O. Panneerselvam became Chief Minister. On 4 December 2001 the Madras High Court acquitted her in both the TANSI and Pleasant Stay Hotel cases. She then won the Andipatti assembly seat in a by-election in February 2002. She was sworn in as Chief Minister on 2 March 2002 and served until May 2006. The Supreme Court upheld her acquittal in November 2003.
