Kalaignar Kaivinai Thittam for artisans

Tamil Nadu launched its own credit-linked subsidy scheme for artisans in about 25 trades after declining to join the PM Vishwakarma scheme.
On 19 April 2025 Chief Minister M. K. Stalin launched the Kalaignar Kaivinai Thittam at Kundrathur in Kancheepuram district. The scheme offers credit-linked subsidies to artisans in about 25 trades, including pottery, carpentry and jewellery making, regardless of their family occupation. At the launch, loans totalling Rs. 170 crore were approved for 8,951 beneficiaries out of 24,907 applicants. The state had refused to join the Centre's PM Vishwakarma scheme, arguing that it reinforced caste-based hereditary occupations.
