The Madras Pioneers, raised in 1780, were renamed the Corps of Madras Sappers and Miners in 1831.

The Madras Pioneers were raised at Madras on 30 September 1780 from two companies of pioneers of the Madras Army. In 1831 the unit was renamed the Corps of Madras Sappers and Miners. In 1834 its headquarters moved to Bangalore, where it remains. The Madras Sappers, known as the thambis, survived the later reorganisations of the Madras Army and continue today as the Madras Engineer Group of the Indian Army.
