An 18-year-old M. Karunanidhi started Murasoli at Tiruvarur as handwritten notices; it later became the DMK's newspaper.

Murasoli was started in Tiruvarur on 10 August 1942 by M. Karunanidhi, then 18 years old. Its earliest editions were handwritten notices written under the pen name Cheran. It was issued as a leaflet until 1944 and had to stop in the mid-1940s because of paper shortages. It later resumed as a weekly and became the mouthpiece of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
