Congress leaders in the Tamil region were arrested as the Quit India Movement began, followed by strikes, sabotage and police firing.

After the Congress passed the Quit India resolution in Bombay in August 1942, the British arrested its leaders across India, including K. Kamaraj and other Tamil Congress leaders. Protests, hartals and acts of sabotage such as cutting telegraph lines and attacks on railway property followed in parts of the Tamil districts. Police opened fire on crowds in several places. The movement was suppressed within months, but it deepened popular support for the Congress.
