Periyar E. V. Ramasamy toured Europe and spent three months in the Soviet Union, an experience that shaped his later politics.

Between 1929 and 1932 Periyar travelled to British Malaya, Europe and the Soviet Union. In December 1931 he left on a tour of Europe with S. Ramanathan and Erode Ramu to study political systems, social movements and public administration. He visited countries including Egypt, Greece, Turkey, Germany, England, Spain, France and Portugal, and stayed in Russia for three months. He returned to India in November 1932. The tour influenced the socialist and egalitarian ideas he promoted through the Self-Respect Movement.
