Red Hills (Puzhal) reservoir built for Madras

· Puzhal Lake

The Puzhal reservoir at Red Hills was built to supply water to Madras, and remains one of the city's main reservoirs.

The Puzhal reservoir at Red Hills was built in 1876 to improve the water supply of Madras. It began as a small tank with a capacity of about 500 million cubic feet and two masonry weirs of local laterite. In 1997 its capacity was raised to 3,300 million cubic feet. The lake, with Chembarambakkam, is still one of the main rain-fed reservoirs supplying Chennai.
