Staying out of politics himself, Rajinikanth warned that 'even God cannot save' Tamil Nadu if Jayalalithaa's party won again, and endorsed the DMK-TMC alliance.

Before the 1996 assembly election in Tamil Nadu, Rajinikanth explained that his own entry into politics would only create confusion and that he could not live up to what people expected. Should Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa's party come back to power, he said, 'even God cannot save the people of the State'. He went on to back the DMK's alliance with the newly launched Tamil Maanila Congress and urged his fans to vote for it. The alliance swept the polls, and his statement is frequently mentioned as one reason for the outcome.
