Royal Indian Navy mutiny reaches Madras
· Mumbai
A revolt by Indian ratings of the Royal Indian Navy that began in Bombay spread to ships and shore establishments including Madras.
In February 1946 ratings of the Royal Indian Navy in Bombay went on strike over conditions and racial discrimination, and the revolt spread to naval units across India. Ships and establishments at Karachi, Calcutta, Madras and other ports joined. The strikers received support from sections of the public and workers in several cities. The mutiny ended after a few days with the surrender of the ratings, but it signalled the declining reliability of the armed forces for British rule.
