Erode was the birthplace of Srinivasa Ramanujan, the self-taught mathematician famed for his work in number theory and infinite series.

Born at Erode in the Madras Presidency on 22 December 1887, Srinivasa Ramanujan spent his childhood in Kumbakonam. With little formal training, he made major contributions to number theory, mathematical analysis, continued fractions and infinite series. After a period as a clerk with the Madras Port Trust, he left for Cambridge in 1914 to collaborate with G. H. Hardy. Ramanujan died in 1920. India marks his birthday as National Mathematics Day.
