Tamil Nadu Day first observed on 1 November
· Chennai
The Palaniswami government began observing 1 November as Tamil Nadu Day; in 2022 the DMK government moved it to 18 July.
In 2019 the AIADMK government led by Edappadi K. Palaniswami announced that 1 November, the day the linguistic state was formed in 1956, would be celebrated annually as Tamil Nadu Day. In July 2022 the DMK government of M. K. Stalin changed the date to 18 July. That date marks the resolution moved by C. N. Annadurai in the Assembly on 18 July 1967 to rename Madras State as Tamil Nadu. The change reflected differing views on which moment best represented the state's identity.
