T. G. Taylor came to Madras as head of the observatory, where he compiled the Madras Catalogue of Stars.

A product of the Royal Greenwich Observatory, Thomas Glanville Taylor reached Madras on 15 September 1830 to take charge of the East India Company's observatory. He came with new equipment such as transit telescopes and a mural circle. Assisted by four Indian staff, he compiled the Madras Catalogue of Stars between about 1831 and 1839. Taylor also carried out magnetic observations and helped set up an observatory at Doddabetta, near Ootacamund.
