Vanchinathan shot dead Robert Ashe, Collector of Tinnevelly, at Maniyachchi railway station and then killed himself.

Robert Ashe, Collector of Tinnevelly district, had been associated with the suppression of the Swadeshi movement in Tuticorin and Tirunelveli. On 17 June 1911 Vanchinathan, a member of a secret revolutionary society, shot Ashe at Maniyachchi railway station as he waited with his wife for a connecting train to Madras. Vanchinathan then shot himself. The killing led to the Tinnevelly conspiracy case against several suspected associates.
