T. V. Sundram Iyengar starts a bus service in Madurai

T. V. Sundram Iyengar began Madurai's first bus service and founded the firm that grew into the TVS Group.

Sundram Iyengar, who had started as a pinewood dealer, began a bus service in Madurai in 1911 and established T. V. Sundram Iyengar and Sons. By his death in 1955 the business ran many buses and lorries under the name Southern Roadways. It laid the foundation of the motor transport industry in South India. The TVS Group later became one of the largest automobile and components groups in India.
