Gandhi presides over Hindi Prachar Sabha silver jubilee

· T. Nagar

Gandhi came to Madras to preside at the Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha's silver jubilee.

Set up in Madras in 1918 to promote Hindi across South India, the Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha had Gandhi as president and was inaugurated by Annie Besant. It became an independent body by 1927. Once the Second World War was over, the Sabha held its silver jubilee in 1946, and Gandhi presided over the Madras celebrations. To commemorate his presence, a memorial was erected at the Sabha.
