Meenambakkam got the first passenger terminal of Madras airport, which then served as a customs airport handling a few international flights.

Operation of the Madras airport passed to the Civil Aviation Department in 1952. Two years later, in 1954, a first passenger terminal went up at Meenambakkam, on the northeastern side of the airfield. At this stage the airport functioned as a customs airport, with only a limited number of international services. Control moved to the Airports Authority of India in 1972, and the old Meenambakkam terminal was eventually turned into the air cargo complex.
