Created by a Madras law, the Madras Service Commission was India's first provincial public service commission and the predecessor of TNPSC.

In 1929 an Act of the Madras Legislature established the Madras Service Commission. Its task was to fill government posts by competitive examination, and no other province in India had such a commission before it. The body was later renamed the Madras Public Service Commission. Since 1970 it has been called the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission.
